Construction changes expected to cause congestion on southbound I-15 in South Layton this weekend
Ogden - The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises motorists that work on the South Layton Interchange project is expected to cause congestion and delays on southbound Interstate 15 this coming weekend.
Beginning Friday, July 16, at 7 p.m., crews on the $97.5 million interchange and roadway project will begin to move traffic from the outside southbound lanes of I-15, to the newly paved inside lanes that have recently been constructed. These lanes are part of the extension of the ExpressLanes, which presently end at 200 North (milepost 328) in Kaysville. The ExpressLanes will now extend north to the Hill Field Road interchange (milepost 331), where they will simply become general purpose traffic lanes from that point north, resulting in a large reduction of the daily traffic congestion now found in the Kaysville area.
Because of the nature of the changes, and the work that must be accomplished to complete the paving of all traffic lanes, lanes on southbound I-15 will be restricted or closed intermittently throughout this coming weekend to allow crews to make the necessary lane movements. Closures will occur as follows:
- Beginning 7 p.m. Friday evening, I-15 southbound will be reduced to two lanes of traffic. That reduction will remain in effect until 11 p.m., when traffic will be reduced to one lane through 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, July 17. At that time, the open lanes will be increased again to two lanes throughout the remainder of the day.
- Southbound lanes of traffic will be reduced to one lane again, beginning at 11 p.m. on Saturday evening, July 17. This reduction will remain in place until 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, July 18, when lanes in service will be expanded again to two lanes.
- Finally, traffic will be reduced again to one lane beginning at 9 p.m. on Sunday evening. This reduction will remain in place until 4 a.m. on Monday, July 19, when all three lanes of traffic will be restored in time for that morning's commuting period.
During these closures and restrictions congestion will likely increase, with delays of from 15 to 20 minutes expected. Motorists should observe the overhead message boards on southbound I-15 for updates on expected delays. Motorists engaged in time-sensitive travel are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
Southbound travelers on I-15 may circumvent this construction zone by taking I-84 east, at exit 340, to southbound US-89 (exit 87) in Uintah. Using this route, they can then rejoin I-15 or the Legacy Parkway in the Farmington area, and continue their travel into southern Davis County or into the Salt Lake City area. I-15 motorists may also access southbound US-89 via SR-193, at the Clearfield 700 South Interchange (exit 334).
As motorists approach this construction zone they should reduce their speeds and watch for electronic signs indicating the lanes closed and encouraging motorists to merge into open lanes. Traffic flow can best be maintained by motorists merging immediately, rather than waiting until the last moment to begin their merge.
